2 + 2 = 5

I’m Tomas Sedovic. No, that’s not really true — my name is Tomáš Šedovič, but it’s easier this way. I live in Brno, Czech Republic and I’m a 23 years old wannabe programmer.
You can reach me via e-mail: thomas@225tms.net

My first computer was Atari 800 XL. We’ve got it as a gift from parents’ friends because we couldn’t afford a “real” computer. It was around 1999 and I was 13.
Dad hooked it up to a TV, booted it up to the BASIC interpreter and using print drawn two pictures of a bird, enclosed in a for loop. Then he typed run and the bird started flying.
I was absolutely stunned and immediately wanted to learn this. Soon enough, I was bothering every member of my family with the animations I made (calling them “programs”).
Sadly, Dad’s knowledge ended with the print and for statements and the only other available resource was 800 pages manual in German (which none of us spoke). Luckily, it contained code samples.
So I typed the samples into the computer, checked what they did, modified some of the values and eventually figured out what all the strange words (school taught us that it’s spelled “colour” but the silly computer understood only “color”) were supposed to do.
And that’s how I learned BASIC — my first programming language. Edsger Dijkstra would say that it warped my mind forever. And he would be right.
My goal is to make the world a better place — by using technology to solve problems, rather than creating ones.
I’m greatly interested in gaining knowledge. Most of the things I know I’ve taught myself reading books, asking questions, observing and tinkering with the world.
What probably attracts me most on computers are their interfaces with people. That means GUI, CLI, various APIs and programming languages (I know it sounds strange, but programmers are people, too!).
I do know a bit about algorithms and operating systems and networks and pointers. It interests me and I would be glad to learn more by working on those lower-level or more abstract things.
However, I believe that my heart is on the edge where people meet technology.
I want to use this site as a way to document my journey though life, share and store what I’ve found and to excercise writing which I both love and suck at.
